By far one of the most spectacular views in the Stellenbosch valley! It’s worth it just to drive up there and marvel.
The first time we visited was in the middle of the cold and wet Cape winter, on the Helderberg Wine Festival weekend and the mist covered everything but the parking lot. We certainly could not be distracted by the scenery and enjoyed their wines (as well as the steak braai) in the comfort of the tasting room full of friends and festival goers. The next time was at night, and while the “fairyland” night lights are quite spectacular, we still needed to come back on a clear day to fully appreciate the view.
So with my mom visiting and spectacular Cape Town weather, we meandered up Annandale road, and what a perfect day it was this time. Wherever you choose to sit and taste their wines you will have an amazing view. Whether it is on the terrace looking out to False Bay or the other side stretching up the mountain, even sitting inside with the floor to ceiling windows you will still see it all. Without a restaurant or other activities, it is a little quieter up there, but a perfect spot for a simple wine tasting with a view.
With the Premium Selection Chardonnay and Syrah both sold out, there are currently only three wines available for tasting. The UVA MIRA (Premium Selection Bordeaux style blend) is really great with your typical black currant flavours and some vanilla and cedar coming through from the French Oak. The Cellar Selection Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon is also very enjoyable, but more of a younger, easy drinking wine with its berry and mocha chocolate flavours. We have yet to taste the white wines so I can’t say how I feel about those.
One of our friends is the newish winemaker at Uva Mira and doing a superb job, so next time you are in the area be sure to pop in!
Wine tasting is R30 for three wines and they are open 7 days a week.
Off Annandale Road, right at the end of the road
